Workload distribution
The course is made up of 10 sessions of 2,5 hours long (weekly sessions) (*), combining theory and practice, where you are going to know and understand the different tools of project management and have time to prepare the team work about planning an NGO project.
As homework, mainly you will have to read the PM4R guide and dedicate some time to prepare the team work about planning an NGO project.
(*) For the intensive format edition in January (GDL and GED) the duration is 3 weeks and the total amount of sessions is 9 distributed in 3 sessions per week.
COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM
WHY IS IT WORTH DOING THIS SUBJECT?
Governance always implies being in charge of development projects: for the city, the county, the country or even to help other countries as well. In a global world, these projects can be more complex and, therefore, more critical to be well managed and controlled.
Unfortunately, the reality is that public organizations do not have a high level of maturity in project management.
This is the main reason why IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) has prepared the PM4R ("Project management for results?) methodology. Another example is in the EU, that they have issued a few years ago a simple project management method called PM2 (PM square).
In this subject you will be able to know how these projects should be well managed, controlled and supervised, using an approach of learning by doing. So, this is mainly a practical subject. And what is more, included as a subject using the Esade's methodology Service Learning, you will be able to contribute to help an NGO giving them ideas and preparing the plan for one of the NGO's project mandates they will provide to us.
In summary, doing this subject you have the opportunity to gain these skills and, in your future work, not be struggled when you are in charge supervising or managing this kind of projects.
It should be noted that, in addition to obtaining a mark for the academic curriculum, you would be able to obtain an accrediting certificate: "PM4R Practitioner" of the IDB. The requirements to be eligible are detailed in the Evaluation section.
COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM
The main objective is to know what project management is, what it is for, as well as the main management techniques.
Although project management works for any type of project, the course will focus on development and social projects. So, this subject is related in a certain way to the International Development subject.
The learning will be carried out based on the Project Management for Results (PM4R) methodology of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), aimed at improving the skills of project teams made up of members of the executing agencies, IDB Staff and members of the liaison bodies.
It is a primarily pragmatic course, since from understanding the importance of each element of management and knowing important tools to manage projects, you will work on a practical case study of a social project, in a team, in which you will practice these tools and, at the same time, you can creatively contribute solutions to an NGO. Until now, we have worked with SOI (Street Heroes of India), Arrels (homeless people in Barcelona) and we expect to work with others in this course.
Course Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will know and understand what the execution of a project entails, and the importance of doing a good management and focus on results, as well as they will learn management skills through the use of the tools taught in the course. In parallel, they will improve their team work and presentation skills.

Methodology
The course will take place in 10 sessions of 2,5 hours (*) and will be based on the PM4R methodology for project management of the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank).
To achieve the objectives of the course and encourage the active participation of students, the Esade's Service Learning (SL) methodology is used.
So, the course is designed and consists of a combination of theory, case discussion, exercises, team work and self-learning based on the material of the PM4R guide, focused mainly on designing and planning a project for an NGO, so the participants can contribute to this NGO.
You can learn more about Service Learning in https://www.esade.edu/en/about-us/mission-values/holistic-education/service-learning
(*) For the intensive format edition in January (GDL and GED) the total amount of sessions is 9.
Assessment criteria
The grade is evaluated as follows:
65% Team works
25% Partial knowledge tests
10% Participation in class
IMPORTANT NOTES:
o In the event that the subject is failed, the subject must be recovered in the extraordinary exam period.
o Attendance of a minimum of 80% is essential to pass the course in the ordinary call, and a minimum of 50% to be able to sit the extraordinary exam.
o Due to the Covid situation, this guide will be subject to the necessary modifications to adapt it to the reality required by possible restrictions in the execution of teaching imposed by the competent authorities.
o To pass the subject the total minimum grade must be 5 out of 10 for Knowledge tests and 5 out of 10 for Group case study.
o To be able to sit the PM4R Practitioner certification exam, the minimum total grade for this subject must be 6,5 out of 10 in the ordinary call (so, if you get more than 6,5 in the extraordinary exam, it doesn't give you the right to sit the PM4R Practitioner certification exam). The mark obtained in the certification exam doesn't count in the subject grade, as it can be done later, and is optional.
o Having so much weight in the final grade, the practical case in group will establish the "intragroup score". Each participant must value the work done by their group colleagues, and it is mandatory to make this score. In the event that a student does not introduce this score to their group mates, this student will not receive their punctuation for the group case study.
The score is as follow:
Intragroup score --> % applied
5 --> 100%
4 --> 90%
3 --> 75%
2 --> 55%
1 --> 30%
Example:
Group case study Grade -- Intragroup score -- % applied -- Final Group case study Grade
8 -- 5 -- 100% -- 8
8 -- 4 -- 90% -- 7,6
8 -- 3 -- 75% -- 6
8 -- 2 -- 55% -- 4,4
8 -- 1 -- 30% -- 2,4
