Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites. Students will work with their own laptop in a remote desktop environment.

Previous Knowledge

Basic knowledge of Excel spreadsheet; especially the working environment and the different commands and basic functions.

Workload distribution

Class attendance (attendance, contribution and exercises): 70%
Daily assignment: 30%

COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

With over 500 million Excel users worldwide, only a small percentage of them knows beyond the basic features.

We aim to overcome that barrier and reach an advanced level that surely will provide you a competitive advantage over other candidates or colleagues.

Course Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge and skills on how to develop business models with MS Excel to create simulation models, models for data analysis or end-user applications, at a high level.

CONTENT

1. Import data into Excel.

2. Understanding Excel range references (absolute, relative, mixed and names).

3. Modelling: identification and use of dependent and independent variables; model parameterization.

4. Excel functions: financial, text and search functions.

5. Introduction to charts.

6. Data tables (sensitivity analysis).

7. Conditional formats.

8. "What if" Analysis Tools: Scenarios, Goal Seek and Solver.

9. Recording Macros.

10. Introduction to the use of controls.

11. Advanced charts.

12. Audit of a model.

13. Protection of a model.

14. Circular references.

15. Databases in Excel: table sorting, filters, PivotTables and PivotCharts.

16. Creating a working interface for end-user application.

17. Macros with VBA programming.

18. Managing risk in a model.

Methodology

Participative classes. Students will acquire the knowledge about the tool through the development of a set of cases. The required theoretical concepts will be introduced when needed.

Assessment criteria

Attendance to class - 50%
Daily assignment consisting on a summary of the class - 50%
