COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

The overarching objective of this course is to provide students a preparation and entry point for academic studies in entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy. Thus, the course is particularly suited for students considering further academic studies (i.e. MRes or Ph.D.).

The course exposes students to central theoretical and empirical perspectives on research in entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy. We will focus on the main questions that define these field and attempt to critically examine how researchers have used a range of theories and methodologies to investigate these questions. As we review the literature, we will seek to identify promising research areas, which may be of interest for future research. We also examine the process of crafting research papers and getting them published in academic journals. We will identify the key elements of high impact papers and review the development process of such studies.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students should

- be familiar with the core theories underlying the entrepreneurship, innovation and strategy domain
- develop the skills necessary to evaluate, critique and review academic research
- be familiarized with the application of current research methods
- be able to identify research gaps and develop academic research proposals

Methodology

This course will be held in a "seminar? style based on a changing reading list and various faculty members of ESADE. During each class, we will discuss 4-5 academic papers in depth.

Students are expected to come fully prepared to discuss and critique the readings that are assigned to each class.

During each session, at least one student will serve as the discussion leader. Discussion leaders are expected to critically review several articles, identify new insights in the research that is being reviewed and evaluate its contribution to the literature, position the articles within the literature on the subject matter, raise discussion question, and act as the discussion moderator for the class session. Each discussion leader is asked to prepare a one or two page summary of the assigned papers which includes a statement of the main research question(s), the methodology, data set if any, a summary of findings, a commentary with your thoughts on the reading, and proposed discussion questions.

Assessment criteria
