Prerequisits

This course is for students who have been waived English II and/or have passed English III who wish to prepare for the international language certificate TOEFL ibt.

Coneixements previs

Equivalent to a pass in English II, III or CAE.

Distribució de la càrrega de treball

Workload distribution:

Class hours 30
Independent study: 30

Observations:
As the language classes are in small groups, full participation on the part of the student is expected throughout. Students receive continuous feedback on their learning and their performance throughout the course.

Given the nature of language acquisition, the figure given for independent study is no more than an estimation: students will be given tasks and assignments to work on outside class, but in addition to this, they are expected to actively seek learning opportunities.

Objectius d'aprenentatge de l'assignatura

Students are often required to demonstrate certification of their English in order to take part in international exchange programmes. The ETS TOEFL Ibt is a well-known commercial certificate (source: the ETS website). A good score on TOEFL ibt is, for many Universities, a requirement to study a Master¿s degree course in English, or to participate in an academic exchange programme. The course aims both to enable students to achieve the required score on the examination, and also to work on their language learning strategies.

Criteris d'avaluació

Students will be able to monitor their progress by means of continuous assessment and feedback given during the course on progress, effort, and test scores reflecting individual strengths and weaknesses. Extensive use will be made of published practice tests which will be scored, analysed and discussed so that students can concentrate on areas needing reinforcement. 50% of the final score is awarded on the basis of these practice tests.
50% will be awarded on the basis of the final test score at the end of the course.

In addition to this, a letter grade from A to D (where A is excellent and D needs further work) will be awarded to reflect how well students have succeeded in developing the key competence related to the subject. This will be awarded on the basis of classroom participation and independent work done by the student. This independent indicator may or may not form part of the numerical grade, and serves to track each student¿s progress throughout the programme.
