Do you perceive yourself as a rational decision maker, someone who thinks through important decisions carefully and choses the best outcome? Although most educated people believe they make decisions rationally, people often use a variety of rules and heuristics that lead to biased decision making in many situations. This course will cover many important decision-making slippages that occur in people's everyday lives, and discuss related managerial implications.
The basic principles in class would have applications across a wide range of business decision making contexts, including financial decisions, investment decisions, managing employees, planning mergers, selling products and negotiating with others.
Judgement and Decision-Making focusses on two key elements: 1) making decisions rationally and 2) influencing others effectively.
In this class we will demonstrate judgment and decision-making slippages in class using exercises, tasks, and surveys and discuss various business contexts in which such slippages may occur. The course will involve two interactive teaching methodologies.: class exercises and discussions. Students will do exercises in class that will demonstrate common decision-making slippages. We will then discuss various decision-making biases and how to avoid these biases.
The workload distribution is 70% classroom activities and 30% autonomous individual and team work.
