COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

The two dimensions that the Practicum encompasses (the professional and academic realms) combine professional experience and a careful reflection on the latter. Consequently, the Practicum contributes to one of the BBA¿s objectives, that is, to train students, as individuals and professionals, to be able to reflect on and critically analyse what happens around them as well as how they can contribute to carry out the corresponding professional activities.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completing the Practicum, the general learning objectives are for students to be able to:
- Analyse the professional work context
- Analyse their own experience within this context, being fully aware of the way in which they participated as well as their contribution and the added value they provided to the activities carried out
- Describe what they have learned, with a specific focus on the selected competencies to be developed.
- Self-manage the development of their own competencies, the aim being to become professionals who are fully aware of their strengths and areas for improvement and who can evaluate their own performance within their organizations.

CONTENT

1. Practicum scope and content

Esade believes that professional endeavours are clearly enriched if, in addition to performing the tasks assigned by the company and achieving excellent results, students are also capable of reflecting on their own work and the contexts in which they work. Once again, this refers to two different dimensions, the professional and academic realms. The Practicum has been especially designed to ensure that both are fundamental components if the students¿ learning experience.

The specific tasks included in each of these dimensions are as follows.
Professional realm: Students have to successfully perform all the tasks assigned to them while working at the organization
Academic real: They have to complete all the tasks required to reflect on their experience within their companies: Learning contract; company and industry study; Learning Journal; final Practicum Report; and tutorials with the Esade-designated academic tutor.

Methodology

Students obviously play a key role in the success of their learning experience in the professional setting. Focusing specifically on their responsibilities, we can differentiate between those that refer to their roles as professionals (which they have to demonstrate within the firm) and those that refer to their roles as students (which they have to demonstrate with their academic tutors and, ultimately, Esade). Below are details on the key responsibilities and tasks to which students have to commit when signing the Learning Contract.

Responsibilities towards the company in which they carry out their internships:
- Meet with the company tutor to agree on the tasks they have to complete while completing their internships and detail these responsibilities in the Learning Contract
- Comply with the organisation¿s disciplinary norms and conduct code
- Collaborate with the professionals working in the organisation where they¿re carrying out their internships, at all times complying with the corresponding instructions to successfully complete their assigned tasks
- Attend all meetings they are invited to, at all times adopting a highly professional attitude
- Maintain the confidentiality of any sensitive information belonging to the company.

Responsibilities with respect to Esade:
- Detail the selected competencies in the Learning Contract and the the academic tutor¿s webpage and take advantage of opportunities that arise in the company to develop these competencies
- Prepare the prior company and industry study within the time allotted by the academic tutor
- Attend the individual tutorials with the academic tutor when convened, seeing these as work-related meetings in which they have to report on what has transpired in the company to their academic `boss¿ and agree on the following steps
- Inform the academic tutor about any issues which may affect the successful completion of the internship
- Complete and turn in the Learning Journal with at least 3 entries via the academic tutor¿s webpage
- Complete the Practicum Report, following the guidelines available on the academic tutor¿s webpage and turning the report in via the same page.
