Prerequisites

The integrative nature of the course requires bringing together and connecting concepts and insights you have learnt in other courses, such as strategic management, marketing, operations, finance and human resources, among others.

Workload distribution

Starting up a new business is an adventure that demands not only resourcefulness, but also hard work and persistence. The course zeros in on critical milestones and challenges faced by entrepreneurs in their start-up journey, from inception through growth and exit. It seeks to equip you with concepts, frameworks, and insights into the process of identifying an idea and turning it into a successful new venture.

Through a wealth of cases, examples, and readings, we will examine how entrepreneurs establish and manage ventures that identify and realize business opportunities. We will work on the dimensions and dynamics of the entrepreneurial process; assist you in the identification of ideas for new ventures and the assessment of their potential to become real business opportunities; guide you through the ideas¿ development into successful business models; and equip you with knowledge and tools to develop the business plan of the new venture.

COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

More than ever vast opportunities arise for aspiring entrepreneurs: this course aims to inspire and empower you to become an entrepreneur. This is a great opportunity to experience the entrepreneurial process in a laboratory. An essential test before you become a real entrepreneur. We will place you in the driver seat, you will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to make your aspirations become reality.

This course is designed for students who have chosen the Business Plan Project track. It seeks to acquaint participants with the content and process of elaboration of such project. The main topics to be covered are the critical factors and dimensions in starting up a new venture, including the the role of a business plan in addressing those.

Course Learning Objectives

This course will facilitate participants in:
1. Integrating knowledge, tools, and skills acquired in previous phases of the MSc programme;
2. Introduction to Design Thinking, with visualization and prototyping to ¿think with your hands¿;
3. Identifying business ideas and developing business models for new venture creation;
4. Pitching and selling your new business effectively, both orally and in writing;
5. Living the entrepreneurial process.

Methodology

The learning is based in case discussions, theoretical presentations, self-directed learning based on recommended readings and the Design Thinking.

The integrative nature of the course requires bringing together and connecting concepts and insights you have learnt in other courses, such as strategic management, marketing, operations, finance and human resources, among others.

In addition to your participation in the sessions, you will have to develop a summary document of your project, with the preliminary description of the Business Model you are planning to use.

Assessment criteria

The FINAL GRADE is going to be 100% based on the FINAL BUSINESS PLAN, following this structure:

- 70%: final DOCUMENT
- 30%: final PRESENTATION

Note: The whole assessment will be based on the final complete work for most of the students. Exceptionally, students from MSc in Finance will have a breakdown of 70%-30% being 70% from the MSc thesis final grade and 30% from the Finance Project, already done during the first term.
