COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

In an ever more globalised world business is not only undertaken at a regional level, nor solely with a neighbouring country, but on a far wider scale.

As such versatile and multilingual communication skills are necessary along with related cultural training.

Globalisation also effects the job market so that ESADE's graduates not only compete with other Spanish graduates but also the whole world of young jobseekers, who in many cases are multilingual and are being culturally prepared with a range of experience abroad.

At ESADE the student has the opportunity to take a third language to as high a level as they can, in order to:

- Enable them to complete their university training abroad (in a francophone country)
- Take advantage of job opportunities on offer abroad.
- Have more chance of success in job applications and interviews in a French speaking company.

Course Learning Objectives

French 1 for GED 2nd year

On successfully completing this course the participants will be capable of understanding particularly relevant and commonly used phrases and expressions (basic information about oneself and one's family, shopping, places of interest, professions etc.). They will know how to communicate when it comes to undertaking simple day-to-day tasks that require simple, direct exchanges of information regarding known or habitual themes. They will know how to describe in simple terms aspects of their past and environment as well as questions related to their immediate needs.

Based on these global aims throughout the course a series of specific aims will be addressed that are linked to a number of competences:

A. Oral comprehension:
1. Understand day-to-day conversations.
2. Understand information (global or specific) from audio texts on daily life (explanations, interviews, advertising, reports etc.).
For this purpose it is necessary to develop abilities to grasp the general sense of a text or listening exercise and/or identify specific information.
B. Oral expression:
(1) Ask for and give information regarding daily life and common scenarios using current expressions.
(2) Participate in conversations on a range of known topics and students' environment.
For this purpose it is necessary to develop basic compensation strategies (to compensate for linguistic deficits) and develop communication strategies: to indicate to the interlocutor comprehension problems, ask for phrases to be repeated etc.

C. Reading comprehension:
(1) Understand simple texts (letters, anecdotes etc.)
(2) Understand genuine texts from day-to-day life such as press articles (understand the general idea and specific details).
For this purpose it is necessary to develop the necessary skills to grasp the general meaning of a text and find specific information, identify how the information is structured to be able to take notes and take advantage of a text as tool for learning.

D. Written expression:
(1) Write simple structured texts on known themes (for example on activities, people, places etc.)
(2) Complete written interactions with other people: write simple letters or postcards, notes, emails as well as requesting and giving information etc.
For this purpose it is necessary to develop basic compensation strategies (to compensate for linguistic deficits) as well as strategies for expression suited to different communicative aims.

To be able to fulfil these aims the participant should acquire the linguistic competences corresponding to this level:

Lexical competence: Master a certain repertory of vocabulary to handle common scenarios in day-to-day life.
Grammatical competence: Use basic grammatical structures correctly.
Semantic competence: Organise meaning, structure ideas despite limited a linguistic capacity.
Phonological competence: Pronounce words clearly.
