COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

What is the world about? Which forces make it move (love, fear, power) and how? What is our place it? Who are we and who do we aspire to be? These are some of the questions that great writers have explored through the stories they told and the characters they brought to life.

The results of this exploration (a deeper self-knowledge, the discovery and/or development of a life purpose, a more profound understanding of 'the other'...) are at the heart of the professional excellence and social responsibility the Bachelor of Business Administration - BBA aims to develop in its students. In this sense, therefore, this course proposes creative writing as an activity which will provide opportunities to acquire these values.

If you are interested in exploring these issues by engaging in an artistic activity such as fiction (short story) writing, this hands-on course is for you.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, you will have:
- applied the writing concepts and tools worked on in the course to write a short story,
- read and provided feedback on 2 of one of your classmates' short story draft,
- received feedback, revised and rewritten your own 2 short story drafts,
- reflected upon their own learning during the writing process.

CONTENT

1. Fiction writing concepts

Fiction writing may be considered an art and a craft and, along the centuries, certain concepts have emerged as being useful to writers to craft their stories. In this course we will learn about some of these concepts such as character, setting, plot and theme and we will use them to write our short stories.

2. Learning tools

As mentioned in the teaching methodology section of this course guide, this workshop will propose different activities to help you write, namely: the same activity of writing, the activity of reflecting upon your writing process and the activity where you will provide feedback on one of your classmates' draft. In order to help you make the most out of these learning opportunities different tools will be provided such as templates with enabling prompts.

Methodology

In line with the hands-on quality of this course, this course will develop according to a workshop methodology which will propose you to do things (write your short story, provide and receive feedback, revise and rewrite) and to reflect upon them and on your learning process. We will walk together as a group and, at the same time, each student will walk their own paths as well in an individual as well as in a shared journey.
In order to nourish it, the course will provide you with:
- writing time, at least 1h per session,
- insights to help you write your story,
- reflection time at the end of each session,
- time at the beginning of each sesión to reconnect with your story, so you can continue writing more easily where you left.

Assessment criteria

Your performance will be assessed based on: a) product, that is, the final short story draft you submit at the end of the course (where creativity, language, voice and an overall appreciation will be considered) and b) process, that is, the quality of the feedback provided to one on your classmates' draft, and the learning process followed throughout the workshop (where authenticity and depth will be considered). Besides these, meaningful participation in class and engagement with the writing activity will also be considered.
