Prerequisites

The prior requirements to be able to sit this course include the Introduction to Economic course and, if possible, a macroeconomics class. This course focuses on applying economic knowledge to prepare a country report.

In addition, students should be able to read and understand economic texts written in Spanish and/or English. This course is bilingual, and students can use either language for any course-related activity (questions and comments, in-class presentations, etc.).

Previous Knowledge

· Basic knowledge of geography, history, demographics, physical and digital connectivity, cross-cultural issues, etc., all focused on the 'doing business in' perspective.
· Knowledge of primary macroeconomic data and relations (GDP, private consumption, investment, balance of payments, etc.).
· Knowledge of key economic indicators (prices and inflation rate, unemployment, interest rates, exchange rates, stock indexes, industry indexes, advanced indicators (PMI), etc.).

Workload distribution

Workload distribution for this class:

a) Attend the in-class sessions (participants must sign the student list in every of the 6 sessions).

b) Teamwork preparing a report on a country of each group¿s choice, requiring a PPT document for its presentation in class as well as a final WORD document to be delivered to faculty via Moodle.

COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

The object of the Country Report: Preparation and Analysis course is fundamentally practical, applying students¿ economic knowledge to a country report. These are generally prepared prior to considering a direct investment opportunity (a factory, real estate, etc.), the outright acquisition of a company, stock purchase, portfolio investment, launch of a product or service in that market, negotiations with a local partner, supplier or distributer, etc.

In addition, this course also encompasses reports on country economies, including documents such as corporate annual reports, corporate and institutional strategic plans, financial consulting work, market research, etc.


Course Learning Objectives

The Country Report: Preparation and Analysis course is fundamentally practical in nature in terms of the knowledge, capacities and sills needed to prepare and analyse a country report.

Given its 'doing business in...' focus, the groups¿ final documents have to adopt a broad perspective (geography, history, demographics, physical and digital connectivity, cross-cultural factors, economic aggregates and indicators, economic policies, perspectives, bibliography and sources of information, etc.). The aim of this course is for students to apply the economic knowledge they¿ve acquired to prepare a country report. These are generally prepared prior to considering a direct investment opportunity (a factory, real estate, etc.), the outright acquisition of a company, stock purchase, portfolio investment, launch of a product or service in that market, negotiations with a local partner, corporate annual reports, strategic plans for corporations and institutions, financial consulting, market research, etc.

The course strives to develop the competencies and skills students need to search for and analyse economic information and data found on different international organisation websites (UN, IMF, OECD, etc.), public and private institutions (governments, central banks, etc.), financial institutions (banks, etc.), industry and professional associations (chambers of commerce, etc.), specialised communications media (Financial Times, etc.) and any primary or secondary source of economic information, etc.

CONTENT

1. Content

The in-class sessions will address the following topics and include the following learning activities:
1. A global and local world: geography, history, demographics, physical and digital connectivity, culture (cross-cultural), `doing business in¿
2. Macroeconomic aggregate economic indicators, economic policies, perspectives, case analysis (country report)
3. Country report presentations. In small groups, students will choose a country and prepare and analyse their respective reports.

Country reports can adopt the following outline:
1. Geography: global, regional and local map, geopolitical and physical (topographical) map, capital, urban and rural distribution
2. History
3. Demographic data
4. Political situation: national symbols, national holidays and other events
5. Cross-cultural aspects: families, religion, social etiquette and protocols, languages, communication and food
6. Doing business in
7. Economy: economic structure, macroeconomic situation and economic indicators
8. Economic policy
9. Perspectives
10. Bibliography and sources of information: international and local organisation websites, books and documents

Methodology

The in-class sessions will consist of the following:

a) The first sessions will be dedicated to faculty presentations on economic data, the instruments and methodologies needed to prepare a country report focused on its economy, etc. These sessions are open in structure and require active participation by students that will select and prepare different country reports in groups with support from faculty.

b) The last sessions will consist of in-class presentations of the different country reports prepared by students. These too will require active participation by the entire class through comments, questions, etc.

Assessment criteria

Assessment in this course is as follows:
a) Group in-class presentation of a country report based on a PPT document or similar (40%).
b) Active class participation in sessions during other group presentations, through comments, questions, etc. (20%).
c) Delivery of the final country report in WORD format or similar, after presenting the PPT in class and after classes have finalised (40%).
