Course Learning Objectives

To develop the ability to extract essential information from a variety of business texts and videos quickly and accurately and to organize and communicate this information in an appropriate business register. In addition, students will practice drawing conclusions from the inputs, and make recommendations for future business strategy and action.

This involves focusing on a series of more specific objectives during the course:

A. to recognise the style and intentions of the inputs: identify the intended audience and principal message that is being communicated.
B. to contextualize the sources and organize information in a logical way to facilitate quick understanding.
C. to make clear recommendations based on the previous information and examining the different possible views.

CONTENT

1. Working with authentic texts, building frameworks to guide composition, using self study and discussion in class

2. In-class tasks and assignments set by the teacher, with extensive feedback; redrafting and rewriting to develop good writing habits.

Methodology

Given the characteristics of the course, there is a minimum requirement of 75% attendance. Failure to meet this requirement automatically leads to a fail.

Assessment criteria

Students' work will be assessed as follows:

Writing file of tasks completed and corrected during the course (50%).They will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

1.Use of language items practiced in class
2.Reflective attitude towards errors and how they might be avoided
3.Effort to go beyond minimum task requirement
4.Effort to apply teacher feedback to subsequent work

Final written task (50%) - a business summary and recommendations
