Prerequisites

Fall course is obligatory for students in first year with a level equivalent to English 2 or higher.
June course is optional for students in first year who have completed English 1.

Workload distribution

Contact hours: 24 hours
(These include input sessions, student participation and individual feedback and counselling)
Independent work: 20 hours

Course Learning Objectives

The course will focus on the following areas:
- Basic Business Language
- An introduction to Public Speaking Skills
- Course debates
- Writing based on authentic inputs


All four skills will be activated with a view to increasing control and confidence in language use. This involves focusing on a series of more specific objectives during the course:

A. Establishing links between theory and practice of presentations in a business context
B. Skills development: Improve listening comprehension and provide appropriate models for production; reading and preparing input texts so as to make useful contributions
C Writing: appropriate register for task. Development of summary writing or arguing a position
D. Speaking: experiential learning through contextualised interactive communication
E. Analysis of problems and generation of ideas for selecting best outcomes

CONTENT

1. Content

1. Working with authentic texts, building frameworks to guide composition, using self study and discussion in class
2. In-class presentations set by the teacher, with extensive feedback.
3. Peer evaluation and discussion
4. Teacher-led critiques and discussion

Methodology

The course will build on existing knowledge as well as developing new techniques for managing various academic and workplace situations.

Form of assessment:
Class participation (20%)to be evaluated according to the following criteria:
1. Uses English for all classroom events both to peers and teachers.
2. Makes constant effort to expand linguistic resources.
3. Shows initiative and will to progress
4. Contributes to positive learning environment.
A mature and proactive approach to both class activities and independent work is considered essential.

Writing File (30%) Completion of tasks and additional rewrites. Effort to apply teacher feedback to subsequent work

Final presentation assessment (50%) in the form of a formal business presentation.

Attendance: Given the characteristics of the course, there is a minimum requirement of 75% attendance. Failure to meet this requirement automatically leads to a fail.
