COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

Operations involve all the processes in a company for output and product delivery
(physical or intangible) to its customers. Every business manager is to some extent
linked to company operations. This link may be direct, as company operations manager,
or indirect, through any other leadership position that requires interaction with company
operations. Furthermore, in many cases the operational processes are responsible for
almost the entire added value of companies' products or services towards their
customers, since a company's competitiveness depends to a large extent on the efficient
and effective execution of precisely these processes.
The objective of the Operations Management course is to identify and analyze the key
factors in operations processes within a company and the impact these factors might
have on the mix between cost, quality and flexibility. We look at these factors both from
an operational day-to-day perspective as well as from a more strategic point of view.
In the last two sessions we will explore how to implement strategy by designing and
implementing a performance measurement system to ensure operational excellence.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of the course students should be able to:
- Relate Operations Strategy to the overall Business Strategy.
- Understand the key aspects of a company operating system, both for industrial
and services enterprises.
- Reflect on the impact of E-commerce in Supply Chain Management
- Understand the key metrics managing a complex Operations structure and
measure them in any Operations environment.
- Analyze an operating system with these key metrics and the learned mapping
tools, and identify its weaknesses and potential for improvement.
- Practice the analytical and decision-making process through case studies linked
with Operations.
- Develop the key competences in terms of Operations Management
- Endow participants with the knowledge required to design a performance
measurement system that allows them to implement strategy and align the
organization's employees with said strategy.
- Simulate the decision-making process within a management team to implement
strategy, defining the strategic objectives and strategy map to determine the
strategic indicators and projects.
Competencies:
1. Demonstrate/apply strategic and systemic thinking.
2. Understand the relational context within organizations.
3. Teamwork and collaboration.
4. Ability to apply knowledge to achieve results in complex operational environments.

Methodology

The course is based on a methodology designed to students with professional business
experience. Case method is the main methodology used in this course, and it will be
complemented with lectures, exercises and simulations. For a proper case discussion in
class, all students must read and prepare thoroughly the cases assigned. Cases can
also be discussed in group before the class meeting. Students are supposed to
participate actively in class.
There will be 6 written reports during the course (see Assessment table below). One of
them is individual (Cup Quickcake) and the other are in groups. The reports that need to
be submitted before a Session are due at 6pm on the day before the corresponding
Session. All of them will have to be uploaded on Moodle.
In the last two sessions we will work on a case study which represents a "best practice?
in terms of strategy implementation (Volkswagen do Brasil) and we will carry out the
Harvard University simulation on strategy implementation (Strategy Simulation: The
Balanced Scorecard) in which the professor will provide both the theoretical background
required and facilitate discussions within the teams.
