COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

Interdependence between private enterprises and public institutions is a central factor in the evolution of modern economies; it appears in many different forms and is a key variable in international competition. An understanding of the features of the interactions between private companies and public institutions is a primary element in the training of a modern manager and business leader. This phenomenon is further intensified by globalization, which challenges the idea of a single government interface for businesses and requires managers to understand governmental decision-making processes at the local, national and supranational level. Therefore, a cross-country and cross-sector mindset is a crucial skill for managers, since they have to adjust their managerial behavior to the unique demands of the institutional setting in which they operate.

The course places a special emphasis on developing knowledge, skills and attitudes suitable to support managerial action. For this purpose, the learning process is centered around interactive lectures, where active participation to class discussions and reference to the current public/private affairs are the expected standard.

The methodology used is designed to encourage active student participation and consists of a combination of lectures, analysis, class discussions and self-directed learning based on recommended readings.

Course Learning Objectives

1-To develop an understanding of the working of government and its influence on the strategies and performance of private enterprises;

2-To develop practical managerial skills in order to succesfully relate to the public sector, a) by being accountable to government and other stakeholders, b) by interacting with government as regulator, as a supplier of services, as a partner and as a customer, c) by influencing and taking part to public policy making.
