COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

This first introduction is hence touching base to strategy, strategic thinking, and strategizing. The course presents the organization as a whole and introduces strategy; this is the concepts, tools, and principles of strategy formulation and competitive analysis; strategic thinking, this is the mental process to generate business insights and opportunities to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage; and strategizing, this is the hands-on activities, the doing of strategy in the organization. In simple words, it has to do with managerial decision-making and actions that directly affect the business' success and further survival.
In a highly changing and hence uncertain environment managers need to make decisions regarding the business present and future. The course displays the tools, processes and skills managers need to identify problems, get and analyze information and make strategic decisions.

Course Learning Objectives

The objectives of the course are the following:

- To gain a global vision of the business/organization
- To understand and practice a planning process and strategic reflection
- To know the tools for analyzing the environment, the industry and the organization
- To introduce and assimilate the key strategic concepts and the different organizational strategies
- To understand how technology changes the way organizations design their strategies.
- To develop the students' ability and skills to:
o Identify problems,
o Gather the necessary information,
o Make strategic decisions based on the analyzed information

Methodology

The course utilizes a diverse array of methodologies combining lectures and discussions, cases, exercises, group work, videos, guest speakers, and other activities. You will be encouraged to contribute to the sessions by actively participating in the course via questions, suggestions, comments, sharing experiences, etc., and to discuss the readings which supplement the course sessions.

Assessment criteria

- The final grade will consist of:

o 10 % attendance, contribution in class/online forums
o 10% presentations, case reports and papers.
o 40% final individual exam
o 40% Final group assignment (50%) & Presentation (50%)

Attendance:
A major part of your learning in this course will take place in the classroom. You are expected to attend all sessions (and be on time!).
If there is any reason why you cannot come to class, you should notify the professors in advance by email. Also, you will have to submit a 2-page write up responding to the study questions for the case for the class you missed. Remember that there is a minimum attendance of 80% in order to qualify for the final evaluation.
