Workload distribution

In addition to attending class, students will work on teams to prepare the 8 practical case studies included as part of this subject.
3 hours per session plus 2 hours preparing each practical case study
There is a written final exam, with open-ended questions which are both practical and theoretical in focus, representing 60% of students¿ final marks.
The practical case study assignments represent the remaining 40% of students¿ final marks. Attending class and actively participating are equally important.

Course Learning Objectives

The aim of this subject is to familiarise students with private banking and how it works, exploring the two key factors which help to determine a private banking client¿s investments: financial and fiscal.

Thus, on the one hand, we will carry out in-depth analyses of the different types of assets and investment vehicles used today in wealth management, and, on the other, explore the different taxes affecting investors, determining the impact these have on investment decisions.

The goal is to develop students¿ ability to analyse different assets and financial products as well as select appropriate investments for different investors and market conditions.

Introduction. Private banking in Spain. Suitability test and investor profiles.

2. Session 2. Private banking products.

Real estate, structured, venture capital and business investments. Open-end investment companies. Funds.

3. Session 3. Fund analysis and selection

Criteria to use when selecting an investment fund. Practical examples.

4. Session 4. Alternative management: Hedge funds

Their origin, objectives, traits, historical results, risks and examples

5. Session 5. Exercises on the financial component of this subject

6. Session 6. The tax structure governing financial investments. Personal income tax (IRPF)

Personal income tax (IRPF), Income structure and fiscal classification.

7. Session 7. IRPF (continued). Taxation on financial products.

8. Session 8. Wealth tax (IP). Inheritance and donation tax (ISD).

9. Session 9. Financing. Mortgage loans.

Assessment criteria

Students¿ knowledge will be assessed by means of a written exam.
The practical case studies aim to evaluate how well students are familiar with the financial and fiscal issues addressed, as well as their ability to analyse and make choices in settings which allow for more than one possible option.

The final exam (consisting of open-ended, theoretical and practical questions) represents 60% of students¿ final marks for this subject.
Case study resolutions represent the remaining 40% of students¿ final marks.
Attendance and class participation are equally important.
