Prerequisites

Students should have passed English 1, or have Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) with at least a B grade (equivalent to a level B2 in the CEFR), IELTS 5, TOEFL 80.

Workload distribution

Workload distribution:
Class hours 100
Independent study 70

Observations:

Class attendance is obligatory. Students who miss more than 25% of the class will not be able to do the final exam and will be marked NP, no presentado, resulting in a loss of their first convocatoria. They will have to take the resit exam in July using their second convocatoria. Students receive continuous feedback on their learning and their performance throughout the course.

Given the nature of language acquisition, the figure given for independent study is no more than an approximation: students will be given tasks and assignments to work on outside class, but in addition to this, they are expected to actively seek further learning opportunities.

Course Learning Objectives

Students successfully completing this course should be able to apply their spoken and written language skills in an academic and professional environment. They will also develop the following skills: :
Oral Skills:
participate actively in a meeting which deals with professional, social and legal issues and work towards a common solution
give a presentation on a professionla issue adapting content and register of spoken communication to the needs of the audience
Aural Skills:
listen to a variety of spoken texts for key points and for detail and take notes
understand a variety of speakers on a range of subjects
Reading Skills:
skim, scan or read in detail newspaper texts and academic texts, according to the task
develop their own opinions and reactions to the content
Writing Skills:
write a summary of a text on a business issue identifying the main points
produce a written commentary on a legal issue in a discursive or opinion format
TOEFL:
Students will become familiar with the TOEFL exam and do a number of related practise activities.

In an increasingly international business environment, a good command of English is also essential for effective communication to take place, not only with native speakers but also as a lingua franca between non-native speakers.

Students have experience in language learning and will have developed competencies in the acquisition of foreign languages.
