Course Learning Objectives
The course will focus on the following areas: the conventional elements involved in leading and participating in formal business meetings. These include: agenda setting, chairing, and managing turn-taking of participants; problem-solving meetings, informal discussion meetings, informational and administrative meetings and disciplinary meetings; minute taking and follow-up action texts.
All four skills will be activated with a view to increasing control and confidence in language use. This involves focusing on a series of more specific objectives during the course:
A. Establishing links between theory and practice of business communication
B. Skills development: Improving listening comprehension and providing appropriate models for production; reading and preparing input texts so as to make useful contributions
C Writing agendas, minutes, briefing notes and follow-up texts associated with meetings.
D. Speaking: experiential learning through contextualised interactive communication
E. Analysis of problems and generation of ideas for selecting best outcomes
Assessment criteria
Class participation 30%
- This is divided into two parts:
a/ Student success on tests on course input texts 15%
b/ Teacher assessement of individual participating during the course 15%
- Coure Journal 30%
- Final Meeting 40%
Final group assessment 50%
Assessment criteriaClass participation (50%)to be evaluated according to the following criteria:
Form of assessment:
1. Uses English for all classroom events both to peers and teachers.
2. Makes constant effort to expand linguistic resources.
3. Shows initiative and will to progress
4. Contributes to positive learning environment.
A mature and proactive approach to both class activities and independent work is considered essential.
Final group assessment (50%) in the form of a formal business meeting.
Attendance: Given the characteristics of the course, there is a minimum requirement of 75% attendance. Failure to meet this requirement automatically leads to a fail.
