Prerequisites

Obligatory course for students in first year with a level equivalent to English 2 or higher.

COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

This optional English course offers advanced practice and training in communication skills needed to enter the workplace and advanced learning strategies to ensure effective communication.

It will focus on the following areas: reinforcement of advanced grammar and lexis to practice business English to enable the student to communicate more effectively in a business setting.

Course Learning Objectives

There will be a review of grammatical concepts that cause common difficulties in expression; expansion and extension of vocabulary; self-monitoring and awareness-raising through peer evaluation and feedback. There will be structured practice leading to more open-ended and independent work on critical areas. Students will be required to extract essential information from the media and develop the arguments into a discussion. For this course the following skills will be activated with a view to increasing control and confidence in language use:

A. Reading: Extracting main points from newpaper articles using them as a basis for discussion and debate.
B. Writing: Focus on different registers appropriate in business communication
C. Speaking: Interactive communication to develop clear and intelligible language use in speech.

CONTENT

1. Contents

1. Teacher-led and computer-mediated presentation of material followed by controlled and free practice, with attention to phonological, lexical and syntactic aspects of the language
2. Individual or group work with material from the press, specialist journals and on-line
3. Register transfer exercises
4. Reading of related texts, self study and discussion in class
5. Exercises on specific grammar points and vocabulary sets
6. Critical awareness / self monitoring for correction

Methodology


The course will build on existing knowledge as well as developing new techniques for managing various academic and workplace situations.

Attendance: Given the characteristics of the course, there is a minimum requirement of 75% attendance. Failure to meet this requirement automatically leads to a fail.

Participation: A mature and proactive approach to both class activities and independent work is considered essential.
