Prerequisites
Good quantitative skills.
Previous Knowledge
Basic undergraduate mathematics and statistics.
Some basic knowledge of economic and financial concepts.
Familiarity with spreadsheets is necessary.
COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM
Investments is a core course in the MSc. in Finance, which will provide a foundation for subsequent courses, such as Asset Pricing, Derivatives and Fixed Income.
Course Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to financial decision-making from the mindset of a professional investor. A goal of the course is to equip students with the
conceptual and technical tools that are necessary for more advanced courses on the MSc. in Finance. The topics covered are approached from theoretical and practical
perspectives.
At the end of the course, students should be familiar with the basic concepts and tools that are necessary to analyse and take decisions in financial markets, especially in
relation to asset allocation.
Students will also develop analytical, problem solving skills and learn how to structure financial decision problems in a logical and systematic way. The course will enhance students' ability to connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications. In addition, students will develop the necessary skills to work both independently and in teams.

Methodology
The course is based on a combination of lectures, which will focus on the theoretical content, problem sets and cases.
Assessment criteria
Ordinary Evaluation
The evaluation criteria has three components:
(1) Class participation (10%)
(2) In-class tests (10%)
(3) Cases and teamwork (30%)
(4) Final exam (50%)
A minimum score of 5 is required both in the final exam and in the average (applying the weights mentioned above) in order to pass the course. The grading criteria can be summarised as follows: if both the final exam grade and the overall average grade are above 5 then the final grade is the average grade. Otherwise, the final grade is the minimum of the final exam grade and the overall average grade.
Retake
If a retake exam is needed (only in cases where the student failed the ordinary evaluation), the final course grade will be determined by the same breakdown as in the
ordinary evaluation.
