Course Learning Objectives

-Understand the basic concepts of European Union Law and differentiate the EU legal system from other international and national legal systems.

- Have a clear sense of EU institutions, decision-making and constitutional principles have evolved.

- Understand the goals and content of key EU policies


CONTENT

1. EUROPEAN UNION LAW

EU LAW STANDARD:

1. The creation of the internal market and the road towards the creation of an internal market; principles: non-discrimination; progressivity; equal access to the market.
2. Free movement of goods (scope); legal contents; exceptions.
3. Free movement of persons (scope); legal contents; free movement of workers; right of establishment; exceptions.
4 . Free movement of services; definition of service; scope of application; legal contents; exceptions.
5 . Free movement of capital; scope of application; legal contents; exceptions.
6. The European monetary union and the European Central Bank
7. External action of the EU; common foreign and security policy; common trade policy; development cooperation.
8. European area of freedom and security; definition; Schengen area; freedom of movement; immigration; visa policy; refugees.

EU LAW EXTENDED:

Substantive Law of the EU from the case law of the Court of Justice and official documents regarding the following topics:
- free movement of goods
- free movement of persons
- free movement of services and capital
- the ECB
- Common Foreign and Security Policy
- Common Commercial Policy
- Area of Freedom and Security

Lectures, case studies, problem-solving

Assessment criteria

Attendance is compulsory.

Assessment details:

STANDARD:
- Ongoing assessment: 30%
- Final exam: 70% (students must pass the final exam to pass the subject)

EXTENDED:
- Ongoing assessment: 50%
- Final exam: 50% (students must pass the final exam to pass the subject)
