Prerequisites

Students should have passed English 1 or have Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) with at least a Grade B (equivalent to B2 in CEFR), IELTS, or TOEFL 80.

Previous Knowledge

As well as having the reuired level of general Engish (see above), a basic level of legal English is also required.

Course Learning Objectives

Students successfully completing this course should be able to apply their spoken and written language skills in an academic and business environment. They will be able to:
¿ participate actively in a meeting which deals with professional, social and legal issues and work towards a common solution
¿ give a presentation on a legal issue adapting content and register of spoken communication to the needs of the audience
¿ listen to a variety of spoken texts for key points and for detail and take notes
¿ understand a variety of speakers on a range of subjects
¿ skim, scan or read in detail newspaper texts and academic texts, according to the task
¿ develop their own opinions and reactions to the content
¿ write a summary of a text on a legal issue identifying the main points
¿ produce a written commentary on a legal issue in a discursive or opinion format
¿ fully participate in classes given in English in other subject areas of their degree programme

Assessment criteria

In order to pass the course students must pass both the oral and written component with at least 50%.
In the resits students need only take the part that they failed. In subsequent resits both parts must be taken.
There is a minimum attendence requirement of 75%. Any student who does not meet this requirement may not sit the final exam in May but go automatically to the resit in July.

The following book must be bought: Language in Practice for Advanced (with answer key) by Michael Vince ed. Macmillan.
