Prerequisites
Students have to be enrolled in either the third year of the BBA programme or 4th year of the Double Degree in Business Administration and Law programme.
Students have to enrol in this subject in order to take part in SUD¿s Solidarity Professional Internship programme.

COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM
This subject serves as one more step to prepare students in the 3rd year of the BBA programme or the 4th year of the Double Degree in Business Administration and Law programme who want to carry out an ESADE University Development Service (SUD) Solidarity Professional Internship (PPS) in the summer between the third and fourth years in the case of BBA students and during the fifth year in the case of Double Degree students.
This subject is also open to other students interested in learning about activist reality in Latin America and learn, in large brushstrokes, about the world of development cooperation.
Course Learning Objectives
The global objective of this course is to raise students¿ interest in collaborating professionally in Latin America as solidarity-minded consultants, working within a more global framework to highlight the transcendence of their contributions. This global framework includes the following topics:
1. Development dynamics in the impoverished world. The origins of cooperation and geopolitical trends and changes.
2. Latin America: society, culture and poverty. This topic immerses students in key Latin American issues: socio-economic disparity (unique to this region), its cultural wealth and dignity (key and highly varied depending on the sub-region), and development strategies in the poorest countries, ending with a close-up of the regions in which SUD students will be cooperating.

CONTENT
1. Stepping out into the wide, wide world After this session, students will understand the course dynamics as well as how the SUD programme and its internships work. They will also become aware of the reality beyond the classroom. |
2. Development cooperation: For what and for whom? This session serves to help students to understand the framework which encompasses international development cooperation. |
3. Forty Latin Americas: Conquest, inequality and unemployment Upon finalising this session, students should be aware that Latin American countries are very different from each other, though their social problems share many of the same root causes. |
4. Cultural wealth of Latin America After this session students should have a greater appreciation for the grandeur, legacy and cultural diversity of the region, in particular, appreciating the wealth of its literature.

5. Economic Latin America: The ups and downs for an eternally promising future After this session, students will be able to better understand the region's economic development expectations. |
6. The state of the nations and their hopes This session helps students to understand the current situation of the different countries where SUD is present, the aim being to help students to understand their role in building a fairer society in their host countries. |

Methodology
This subject comprises three types of work:
1. Lectures on the session topics, addressing different aspects to help students to understand the immenseness, wealth and diversity of Latin America as well as its key problems and difficulties.
2. A final part in which former SUD students will talk about their own experiences carrying out their internships in Latin America the previous year.
3. Articles. Students will be required to carry out some assigned readings. These serve to further explore key issues which cannot be addressed in depth during the lecture sessions due to time constraints but which serve to help to better understand Latin America.

Assessment criteria
Exam: 40% of the final mark
A personal reflection on one of the topics addressed in class: 30% of the final mark
Tests on readings: 20% of the final mark
Attendance and participation: 10% of the final mark
In addition, students also have to achieve the following in order to pass this subject:
1. Attend at least 80% of the sessions. No additional justified absences will be accepted unless directly approved and notified by Programme Management.
2. Earn a minimum of 4 out of 10 on the exam and on personal reflection.
