COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

Develop an integral view of the firm and the environment in which it operates. This vision goes beyond the functional aspects and gives special emphasis to the factors that determine the social and political framework.

Contribute to educate executives that are thoughtful, sensitive and aware of their personal and professional responsibility.

Highlight the influence the socio-political framework has on companies and, at the same time, the organisations' ability to carry out social, cultural and political transformations.

Course Learning Objectives

1) Acquire a set of basic notions of political philosophy and science.
2) Develop students' ability to analyse and interpret socio-political reality, bearing in mind all the elements that make up that reality.
3) Foment a critical spirit as a necessary condition to determine one's own political opinion.
4) Understand the important transformations in contemporary politics and assume the governance challenge.
5) Reflect on the corporate world's social and political impact.
6) Understand politics as an inherent facet of every human society.
7) Understand the grandeur of politics

CONTENT

1. COURSE SYLLABUS

1) Introduction to politics. Crisis within traditional politics. Political philosophy as legitimation.
2) Right and Left: the need to redefine the dichotomy.
3) Nationalisms: identity and politics.
4) Parties, participation by citizens and democratic quality.
5) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): companies as political actors in the new governance scenario.
6) Politics and values: How can we restore the grandeur of politics?

Methodology

Each session consists of 3 parts: A lecture on the theoretical components, text commentaries and debate amongst students. Some sessions will also include group assignments.

Assessment criteria

The final mark for this course comprises the following:

1) Attendance and class participation (20%)

2) Written reflections on each of the sessions (20%)

3) The individual project at the end of the course (60%)

At the start of the course, faculty will upload the required readings for every session onto the course website on Moodle. They may also indicate other books or articles to be read.
