COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM
This subjects contributes in different ways:
-Like any other economics subject, it provides students with a specific language and reasoning, adapted to analysing situations, searching for solutions and dialogue.
-Specifically, as a macro-economic subject, its focus is global and promotes a vision of society as a whole.
-In particular, based on its methodology, the subject focuses on transmitting a need to take a stand on economic issues with social interest and knowing how to properly reason their position.
Course Learning Objectives
This subject has been designed for students that have completed the first year of the programme and have already studied the key macroeconomic models through the Macroeconomics subject. However, students will still have some doubts regarding everyday issues which are not well-reflected by those models and which can condition our economic development, our day-to-day reality and even our economic future. Some of these issues may be temporary while others may be more structural.
Consequently, this subject does not purport to transmit specific content. The latter is based on current events and may include other important issues that might arise when actually sitting the subject. The fundamental aim is to transmit an interest in the world around us and a way, a methodology, to analyse and interpret that reality. The latter is the key learning objective for this subject.
CONTENT
1. The job market We don't only refer to unemployment but also other less-known issues such as the increasing number of "working poor", the most common qualification levels found in our country, the different types of job contracts, the use of part-time contracts during the crisis and, of course, the high number of temporary jobs. We would also like to comment on the Danish concept of "Flexicurity". |
2. Demographics and retirement What retirement system do we have in place, how has it evolved over recent years and how will it evolve in the near future? Is it about to collapse? What's the situation in other countries? Until what age will someone who has just got his/her first job contract at the age of 25 have to work? The electoral use of pensioners and their votes. |
3. The Spanish economic growth model Key industries in the Spanish economy and recent trends. The quick and easy growth through the construction industry and its relation with high levels of political corruption. If we don't have "bricks", are we only left with "sun and sand"? Do we invest in innovation? And in education? Do we export human capital? |
