Workload distribution
The course is delivered in 12 sessions of 3 hours each. Each week we will cover a specific through a combination of interactive lectures, guest executives and cases discussions. We will also prepare a final project for the class.
Course Learning Objectives
The course is focused mainly on the topics related to growth, in the realm of Corporate Strategy. The course extends and deepens on growth options such as international expansion, business diversification (horizontal or vertical), and on growth modes comparing mergers and acquisitions, strategic alliances and organic growth. Students in Strategy II examine further different contexts for strategizing such as listed firms, family-owned business, or the non-profit sector. The course will examine more in depth governance looking at international differences, how new technologies affect strategic management and the challenges of strategy execution.
The course has been designed to help students reach the following objectives:
Develop an integrative view on how to manage strategically
Understand better the implications of choosing and implementing different growth strategies
Understand better how to identify, analyze and manage key stakeholders in organizations
Understand the main issues behind strategy implementation and execution

CONTENT
1. A Framework for Strategic Management focusing on corporate strategy We will introduce a general framework what will help students organize al the tools and concepts they learn in this course and in previous classes. The model should be a good reference for future strategic thinking in their positions, independently of the nature of the organization. |
2. International expansion and global management We will examine the main decisions and challenges managers and their teams face when expanding internationally. We will then look at the organizational and managerial issues that international firms have to deal with such as configuration and coordination, or centralization and decentralization.

3. Diversification, acquisitions and alliances We will look at the growth options that require firms and managers to move beyond their comfort zone such as horizontal or vertical diversification. We will also examine the issues and managerial challenges of the main modes for growth - acquisitions, alliances and intrapreneurial initiatives.

4. Expectations of Stakeholders in Different Contexts We will look at tools and frameworks that help us identifying, analyzing and managing relevant stakeholders in organizations. We will also look at the fundamentals on governance and its link to strategic management. |
5. Strategy Implementation Technology and Execution. We will examine enablers for strategy implementation and execution, being the first one techonolgy and the second one leading change. |

Methodology
From a methodological point of view this course aims to foster individual learning and group work, as well as enabling the effective integration of knowledge learnt in policy and strategy courses related to a range of functional areas. Therefore the following pedagogical methods are used:

- Student debates
- Forums with participation from executives
- Group summaries of classes
- Case study competitions
