Methodology

Completing this class will involve fulfilling two key responsibilities: taking part in class discussion (including preparation) and writing a final exam.

Class discussion is the most important learning element of this class. Therefore, a key expectation is that students thoroughly prepare for and actively participate in class discussions.

Preparation for class discussion involves careful reading and thinking of all assigned materials. That being said, students are not expected to necessarily fully understand all of the readings prior to each class. Questions about what methods a given article uses or why the work is important, for instance, can all be constructive contributions to class discussions.

To facilitate preparation for class discussion, students will prepare a weekly memo integrating all the assigned readings for a particular session. The integrating memo should go beyond summarizing each individual paper. It should also address how the individual readings are related to one another and how they together contribute to the field's body of knowledge more generally. Detailed instructions on how to craft the weekly memos will be given in the first class session.

Active class participation is expected. Students' participation in the class discussion will be assessed on the quality of their contributions. The key considerations are: the extent to which the contributions are accurate and insightful, the extent to which they reflect a solid preparation, and the extent to which they are helpful to other students and to the atmosphere in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to present their weekly memo findings to the rest of the class.

Details about the final exam will be discussed in class.

Assessment criteria

Grades in this class are meant to gauge the extent to which students demonstrate an informed and thoughtful understanding of the major themes covered as well as the extent to which they contribute to others' pursuit of that goal. Evaluation will be on the basis of the following weights:

Class participation & preparation (including write-ups) 50%
Final exam 50%

Class participation will be graded on each student's degree of quality contribution toward class discussion. To ensure an informed discussion, students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss (not simply summarize) each article, regardless of whether it was assigned to them or not. Scores for class participation & preparation will be based on the extent to which classroom contributions reflect solid preparation. The key considerations here will be the extent to which students participate in a way that is accurate, insightful and helpful to other students.
