Prerrequisitos

The objective of this course is to raise students' level of English to a level equivalent to a "B pass Cambridge Certificate in English (FCE)" or B2.2 on the Common European Framework. As a prerequisite, students should have at least an upper intermediate level, up to C on the FCE, and be able to communicate with some fluency on general topics. All students are required to take the placement test beforehand, whether or not they have an official certificate.

Conocimientos previos

Students have experience in language learning and will have developed competencies in the acquisition of foreign languages.

Students entering the Faculty of Law with a level slightly below the target level will be required to take the preliminary course starting in June/July.

Distribución de la carga de trabajo

Classroom sessions: approximately 90 hours

Independent study: 65 hours.

Given the language learning process, the number of hours of independent study is approximate. Students will be given assignments to complete outside of class, but should also actively seek out other learning opportunities.

Contribución de la asignatura al programa

Students have the opportunity to undertake an academic exchange at foreign universities during their studies, many of which offer courses taught in English.

In addition, some subjects will be taught in English during the course.

After graduation and in an increasingly international professional environment, a good command of English is essential for effective communication.

Students will become familiar with legal terminology in English.

Objetivos de aprendizaje de la asignatura

Students who pass English 1 should reach a level at least approaching a "B pass" (First Certificate, Cambridge University) and have acquired the skills necessary to move effectively in an academic environment and in the legal and/or business world.

They will be able to:

- Participate in a discussion on social and legal issues and express an opinion.

- Give a presentation on a legal or social issue.

- Understand a variety of speakers on a variety of topics.

- Understand the main points of texts on a variety of topics.

- Write an opinion piece defending a point of view.

Metodología

Classes are conducted in English and students are required to communicate in English with both the teacher and fellow classmates. The approach is interactive and demands full participation and commitment on the part of the individual student and of the group.

Effective learning also depends on extensive individual work outside class, writing tasks, extensive and intensive reading, studying structural and lexical aspects of the language, preparing presentations and researching course topics.

Criterios de evaluación

In metodologia Docente: Both written and oral skills will be evaluated.

Oral Component 50%

Written Component 50%

In order to pass the course students must pass both the oral and written component with at least 50%. In the resits students need only take the part that they failed. In subsequent resits both parts must be taken. There is a minimum attendence requirement of 80%. Any student who does not meet this requirement may not sit the final exam in May but go automatically to the resit in July.

Bibliografía

All class material will be provided by the teacher and compulsory class material will be shared via the class Moodle.
