Conocimientos previos

Students are expected to have a sound general knowledge of history and to be familiar with
the structure of the state and the division of its powers. They are also expected to follow in the
media most significant events affecting International Society.

Contribución de la asignatura al programa

The purpose of this part of the course is to introduce students to the main characteristics of
the International Society and the law that governs the relations between the main players in
the international arena (Public International Law).
This part will expose students to the basic topics such as; the historical development of the
International Society and Public International Law ("PIL"); the sources of PIL; the law of
treaties; the relationship between PIL and domestic law; its main subjects; personality and
recognition; state jurisdiction and immunities; state responsibility; diplomatic protection; and
international dispute settlement.
COVID-19

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this Teaching Guide guide will be subject to the necessary
modifications to adapt it to the reality that eventual restrictions on the performance of
teaching imposed by the competent authorities might require.

Objetivos de aprendizaje de la asignatura

The goal is that after completing this part of the Course students are able to:
1. Master the fundamental toolkits of Public International Law in order to apply it in areas of
professional activity such as law, journalism, politics, a diplomatic career, international
organisations or the world of business.
2. Interrelate this knowledge with othe r courses taught on this programme and contextualise it
within a global framework of international relations in such a way that they can understand the
underpinnings of the relevant legal rules in every situation.
3. Identify, formulate, and resolve problems in the area of i nternational relations.
4. Develop both a critical and realist spirit to inter-state activity both in develo ped countries
and developing countries.
5. Use available techniq ues and tools, such as internet searches for jurisprudence, and
comparison of precedents from diverse legal systems.

This part of the Course will allow students to further develop the following skills and
competences:

Metodología

Active class participation is expected from the students in both the theoretical and practical sessions.In addition to attending classes, students are expected to read the prescribed readings prior to theclass, show a capacity to think critically and creatively during class discussions and to listen andengage constructively with alternative points of view.
Spontaneous contributions during class discussion will have a significant role in the final grade.

Criterios de evaluación

Students' performance will be assessed according to the following criteria:
1. Mid-Term exam in October 40% of the Grade
2. Mandatory presentation during class
3. Final Exam 40%
4. 20% Participation and behaviour during class
