Students attending the Consulting Academy course will get a holistic view of the skills, dynamics and trends that are currently going on in the consulting sector. An interactive learning experience with experienced professionals from top consulting firms
Objetivos de aprendizaje de la asignatura
The Consulting Academy course will help students to understand the importance of having the right attitude to be successful when seeking to land a job in (strategy) consulting through the following:
-Understanding the fundamental concepts regarding the consulting environment.
-Being capable of solving a case with specific methodologies and skills, particularly the case method.
The following pedagogical objectives or Learning Outcomes are expected:

Contenidos
1. Content & Professors - Virtual Reality in-class practice and other tips for Recruitment Process preparation - Roleplay gamification. Course wrap-up. Practical advice towards next steps - Introduction to Case Coach, the platform for Consulting Preparation (paid platform, free access for our students). Guidelines to maximize the use of the tool - Introduction to consulting: What is consulting? The application process. Keys to succeed - Problem structuring. How to read information and how to make it meaningful? - Digital transformation projects and key concepts review - How to prepare for consultancy recruitment processes? - Slides as consulting product. Story telling. How to effectively communicate? - Pricing strategy definition for an international event in Saudi Arabia - The Consulting method. Analysis and problem solving. Critical thinking deductive vs inductive - Case toolkit. How to estimate important facts and figures, frameworks, important formulas and math + brainteasers

The previous syllabus is intended to serve as a script for each course class. As the course progresses, however, the syllabus may be subject to change to adapt it to the group rhythm, the availability of professors/guests and any other unforeseen circumstances.
At the end of each class, faculty will inform students about the plans for the following class and, if applicable, provide them with instructions to carry out the corresponding challenges.

Metodología
In order to achieve the objectives of the course, a mix of the methodology based on the "learning by assisting" sessions and the "learning by doing" approach will be followed: theory delivery, active participation in class, network with lecturers, application of theory (in-class/homework exercises) and case discussion whenever possible.
Sessions will be aimed at delivering and nurturing insightful knowledge of very concrete areas of the World of Consulting, giving practical examples, and actively working on them.
Format:
-Mandatory presential attendance in 10 out of the 10 sessions (except for major causes which will need to be justified by the professors, to whom students should directly address to obtain the exemption certificate mail).
-Should you not be able to come to class for a justified reason, please contact the professor at least 2 days ahead of the class.
Advice:
Students should keep the following in mind when working on the activities and deliverables proposed:
-Work should be done on a weekly base on the research, readings, challenges and your classes' notes to be ready to participate in every session.
-Send an email to Oriol (oriol.gutierrez@esade.edu) cc'ing Xavi (xavier.marlasca@esade.edu) if you have any doubts regarding the course or sessions.
Criterios de evaluación
Class Evaluation will be graded attending two criteria:
1) Active individual participation, representing up to 50% of the total grade.
-Attendance:
--Mandatory presential attendance. In order to opt to a 10 in this 50% of the final grade, participants will not be able to miss any session. Exceptions: major causes justified by the faculty team, students should directly email Oriol (oriol.gutierrez@ esade.edu) cc'ing Xavi (xavier.marlasca@esade.edu) to obtain the exemption certificate mail.
--A minimum class presential attendance of 8/10 sessions is required to opt to pass the course.
--Should you not be able to come to class for a justified reason, please contact the professor at least 2 days ahead of the class.
--As it happens with consulting interviews: Random cold calling questions could be asked
-Class participation:
--The quality of your contributions and your active listening to guest speakers are relevant components for the evaluation of your class participation.
---Should you be caught having an unprofessional behavior in one of the sessions, you will immediately fail the course and you will not be allowed to participate in the remaining sessions
--Grading class participation is necessarily subjective. However, we try to make it as objective as possible. Some of the criteria for evaluating effective class participation includes:
---Is the participant prepared? Do comments show evidence of analysis of the case/challenge? Do comments add value to our understanding of the situation? Does the participant go beyond simple/repetition of basic facts without analysis and conclusions? Do comments show an understanding of theories, concepts, and analytical devices presented in class lectures or reading materials?
---Is the participant an active listener? Are his interventions relevant to the discussion? Is the participant willing to interact with other class members?
---Is the participant an effective communicator? Are concepts presented in a concise and convincing way?
2) Learning Journal: 1-2-page Final Take-Away Report over topics and notions delivered throughout all classes. Representing up to 50% of the total grade:
-General information: The report must be done in pairs but submitted by only one student of each pair.
-Deadline: two weeks after the last session of the course elective
-Tips:
--Add references to readings / materials / notes from different sessions. Include a superscript to indicate in which session it was mentioned. e.g., MECE^6.
--Connect ideas from different sessions. Instead of structuring each paragraph by session, it is recommendable to structure the paper by concepts / ideas learned in all sessions.
--Try to deliver an interesting storytelling flow.
--Use bolding/colors to highlight key messages.
-Please, follow the below guidelines for the submission of your deliverable:
--Line Spacing: 1,5
--Font: Calibri 11
--Minimum Length: 1 A4 page
--Maximum Length: 2 A4 pages
--Save the document as "CA - [Name of student A] - [Name of student B]"
If you want to prepare your Learning Journal in a different format than a Word Report (or if it is different from the formal requirements proposed), please notify Oriol and Xavi to confirm if your format is valid.
If you fail to pass the course, you will not be able to recover the attendance and participation part of your grade (it will be based on your first attempt at the course). You will be able to improve your grade by delivering a new final project and retaking the course tests.
