Course Learning Objectives
To prepare and produce effective workplace texts in context adapting the register as appropriate to suit a variety of audiences and a variety of purposes.
This involves focusing on a series of more specific objectives during the course:
A. to recognise the style of workplace writing; identify the audience and adopt the right tone and style
B. to identify the structure and function of different workplace texts, and recognise the intertexuality component of business communication
C. to practice checking and editing skills to ensure a high standard of presentation and content for delivering different messages as a representative of a firm, as well as an individual
D. To learn about how an audience perceives one, and how one can learn from this
Methodology
All tasks are set within a business context. Formative assessment takes place throughout the course in the form of teacher feedback. Input includes authentic texts and audio materials.
Assessment criteria
Students' work will be assessed as follows
Assessed Assignments 1 and 2 are 60% of the final mark
Final exam 40%
The assignments will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
1.Use of language items practiced in class
2.Reflective attitude towards errors and how they might be avoided
3.Effort to go beyond minimum task requirement
4.Effort to apply teacher feedback to subsequent work
Final written task (40%) - a business summary and recommendations
Attendance: Given the characteristics of the course, there is a minimum requirement of 80% attendance. Failure to meet this requirement automatically leads to a fail. Students will then have to take the exam in the next available sitting.
Students are not permitted to drop out of a course after the date specified by Programme Management. Failure to drop out before the stipulated date will result in an NP and the student having to sit the exam at the next available opportunity.
