COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

The aim of this course is to provide students with a solid understanding of the criteria and processes involved in people management. The course's contribution to the programme is establishing the foundations for people management which future executives will have to be familiar with. In this respect, the course is aimed at future managers, regardless of the functional area in which they work.

Course Learning Objectives

- Conceptualise and see people management as pertaining to the strategic area in organisations.
- Understand what the main policies associated with people management in organisations are (recruitment, selection, remuneration, organisation, promotion, performance, etc.).
- Understand the challenges people management implies for executives.
- Know how to react to the people management problems that tend to arise in executives' day-to-day work.

CONTENT

1. Global vision of people management: What strategic HR management means

Overview of approaches to personnel policy from the company policy perspective

2. Integration

Recruitment, selection and joining an organisation. Assignment and adjustment of person/post. Organisational and personnel development: professional career planning and promotion options. Leaving organisations: cutting ties.

3. Contribution

People's expectations and the organisations' needs: Establishing expected contributions. Variables that influence performance. Perfomance review processes: aims and methods. Evaluation implications: decisions regarding salary, training and employment.

4. Remuneration

Remuneration criteria and establishing salary structures. Defining salary levels in internal labour markets: internal equity and external competitiveness. Additional salary elements: motivation, integration and professional career expectations.

5. People management by executives

Common challenges faced by new executives. How to achieve employee commitment. How to manage difficult or low-performing employees. How to manage difficult peers or superiors. How to manage high-performance workers and executives with problems adapting to the group. Managing success and failure.

Methodology

The methodology applied combines lectures by faculty on concepts related to the set readings followed by discussions and debates on those concepts and their practical application (for example, through role-playing activities, videos and case studies). The aim is for students to assimilate the content of each session and see how it can be applied in practice.

Assessment criteria

Students will be assessed on the basis of their participation in class and their attendance, as well as their results on the tests regarding the set reading assignments.

The in-company project will be assessed on the basis of a technical report and, if necessary, on a presentation given to an assessment committee.
