COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

This course is a joint venture between Finance faculty and ESADE Careers with the goal to provide an overview of what is an investment bank and its different core divisions and to prepare students in the best way for Spring Weeks.

Spring Weeks are increasingly becoming a relevant mechanism for investment banks to do early recruiting and to pre-select high-potential candidates ahead of the formal Summer Internship process. Given how early the recruiting process starts, this course aims at providing a general overview of the industry, basic theoretical valuation concepts and recruiting tools needed to prepare for applications, interviews and spring week participation. In addition, several alumni will share their experiences in the industry.

Course Learning Objectives

The student attending this course will successfully acquire the following knowledge:

1. Able to understand a company's financials and its dynamics
2. Know the different divisions in investment banking
3. Get a first impression on specific Investment Banking tasks by getting to know an LBO and M&A Case as well as a trading simulation
4. Understand the application process for spring weeks with its challenges and chances
5. Be able to prepare application documents
6. Sharpen their communication and networking knowledge to increase success in applications and Spring Weeks participation

CONTENT

1. Investment Banking Industry History and Trends

In this session, we will provide an overview of the different types of banking models with a focus on Investment Banks. We will explain the origins of these type of firms and their evolution thereafter. We will also explain the position in the market of the different banks today and we will comment on the different trends the industry is seeing today.

No preparation is needed for this class.

2. Basics in Finance

We will explain basic financial topics needed to understand valuation. These topics will be: P&L and cash flow, Enterprise Value and the concept of time-value of money. Once this basic framework is provided, we will scan through the key valuation methodologies so the student is able to start grasping these topics (DCF and multiple-based methodologies). We will ensure the student understands which concepts might be asked in an Investment Banking interview.

Ideally some key financial and accounting topics like understanding of what the 3 accounting statements are (IS, CF and BS) have been covered but we will start from scratch

3. Get ready for applications

During this session we will first recap the specifics of Spring Week and discuss the best strategy for applications. We will then go through the different steps of a typical recruitment process. By reviewing applications documents together, you will better understand what makes a good CV and Cover letter, so you can apply the best practice on your own documents. As another important part of the selection process, we will talk about tests and video interviews. Last, we will discuss how interviews may look like and how you can best prepare for cases the interviewer might ask you. This class gives you a solid foundation so you are secure to apply to spring week and prepare yourself the best way possible.

4. How to communicate with impact

Clear and precise communication is key to make a good impression and show who you are. During this session, you will learn different types of self-presentation and how to structure them. By writing your own Elevator Pitch, you will start to reflect on how to bring across your story and your strengths.

5. Networking

The best way to get into investment banking is to transform yourself into a banker. Talking to business representatives will broaden your knowledge of the banking industry and get insider information. But with whom can you connect, and how do you do it? This course will explain to you the importance of networking and give you the necessary tools and strategies how to network.

6. Trading Simulation

Take the same simulation used to develop the new hires at the world's largest financial firms. Experience both sides of the industry as you operate as a market maker and sales trader to facilitate trades for an investment bank, and allocate assets to beat the benchmark as a portfolio manager.

As you rotate through roles in the simulation, your performance data will let you know which side of the industry to follow, and can fast-track outstanding performers to internship opportunities.

7. Alumni Talks Series

To give you the best understanding of what a job is about, we have organized 4 sessions with ESADE alumni in which we will engage with former students who are now working in investment banking. They will first share their stories with you and walk you through the normal day routine.
Afterward, we will have an open discussion with them and clarify the doubts you might have. Don't miss you to ask your questions ¿ so better prepare them. We will cover the following divisions: Investment Banking (M&A, Capital Markets), Trading, Equity Research, Wealth Management/Asset Management. Remember, you can ask personal questions as well as getting to know their company.
