Course Learning Objectives

Logical reasoning, problem solving, and recognizing and mitigating cognitive biases are among the most fundamental skills that facilitate effective work in any area. In this course, we systematically practice these skills, learning to apply them to concrete problems across domains. Students will gain a foundation in critical and creative thinking upon which they can build expertise in disciplinary knowledge.

CONTENT

1. Analyzing problems and decisions

#biasidentification : Identify and explain how biases result from psychological mechanisms or use of heuristics
#breakitdown : Organize problems into tractable components and design solutions
#constraints : Identify and apply constraint satisfaction as a way to solve problems
#gapanalysis : Identify and evaluate whether there are suitable existing solutions to a problem or whether a creative new solution is required
#rightproblem : Characterize the nature of the problem

2. Evaluating claims and justifications

#deduction : Analyze and apply deductive logic
#estimation : Use estimation and approximation techniques appropriately
#fallacies : Identify and correct logical fallacies
#induction : Analyze and apply inductive reasoning

3. Solving problems

#analogies : Use analogies in problem solving appropriately
#biasmitigation : Identify methods to mitigate the e¿ect of biases and determine when it is appropriate to do so
#heuristics : Know when to use heuristics and know when to avoid them.
#scienceoflearning : Evaluate and use e¿ective strategies to learn or teach specific types of material
