Previous Knowledge
Prior knowledge. Knowledge of other courses taught in the Master of Innovation and Entrepreneurship is needed for this course. We will build and extend what you have learned in the prior classes, such as Design Thinking. I look forward to accommodating participants with different backgrounds and I expect diversity to drive teamwork creativity.
Mindset, attitude and intrinsic knowledge. Participation in the classroom is instrumental for the success of the course. Thus, participants should be prepared to participate in class discussions and take part in group projects. This implies capacity to come up with arguments and ideas, the audacity to share it with others and openness to receiving constructive criticism. Equally, it implies the ability to listen attentively and criticize constructively the arguments of others. Your arguments should be carefully thought-through and backed by evidence and logic.

Course Learning Objectives
Class 1 - Innovation outcome: What is innovation and how do teams innovate? The objective of this class is to clarify what successful innovation represents and why large companies innovate.
Class 2 - Innovation process: The objective of this class is to start understanding how the innovation process unfolds. In light of that, we will explore learning by doing approach (a.k.a. trial & error or iterations).
Class 3 - Innovation project: How to manage an innovation project trajectory and for several projects? The objective of this class is to learn how an innovation manager navigates innovation funnel.
Class 4 - Innovation organization: How to organize people working on the innovation projects, get support of the key stakeholders and partner with the ecosystem? The objective of this class is to learn how to manage people involved in innovation.
Class 5 - Innovation portfolio: How to create and maintain a balanced set of innovation projects? The objective of this class is to learn what represents a balanced portfolio and how an innovation manager should create and maintain it.
Class 6 - Sustaining innovation: Sustaining innovations contribute to short to midterm performance. Sustaining innovation often requires skills and expertise that are not found inside of the company yet are complementary or intertwined with them. How do you make sure that your company is building yet also going beyond the existing competencies to churn sustaining innovations?
Class 7 - Disruptive innovation: Disruptive innovations threaten to make companies existing business model obsolete. Disruptive innovations usually require entirely different operating approach and business model. How do you make sure that your company is future-proofing against potential disruptions?
Class 8 - Moonshot innovation: Moonshot innovations aim to solve big societal challenges usually by leveraging breakthrough technology. Moonshot innovations have extremely high risk/reward ratios. Should your company become a moonshot innovator, and how?
Assessment criteria
Individual participation. Attendance and participation are absolutely essential for the success of this course. All participants are expected to be prepared and to participate actively in the class discussion. In evaluating an individual's class participation, I will consider attendance as well as the quality and frequency of participation in every class. Quality comments reflect thought and analysis that moves our understanding of the topic forward. They are clear and concise, fit into the flow of conversation, and most often build on (or disagree constructively with) what others have said. In light of the hybrid format of the course, participation will be assessed through Google forms you fill out before the class as well as the comments you make in the class verbally or via the chat function.
The exam will be in a form of a quiz.
The exam will represent an application of the course learning on a particular example, an innovation challenge that occurs in a certain company. You will receive a short explanation of the example and a set of specific questions, (e.g. between 8 and 10 question), concerning the decisions you would make.
Final assignment
Course assignment represents an analysis of innovation management practices at a large, established company and recommendations on how they should change or improve their practices. It represents an essay that each team is expected to submit 2 weeks after the course is over. Further information on the format, number of pages and companies to select from will be provided in a separate document. Assignments will be the subject of the group performance assessment. Quality of the work will be evaluated primarily for the team as a whole.
Final grades will be calculated as follows:
Individual Participation 40%
Quizes 30%
Final assignments 30%
Bibliography
A mandatory preparation pack will be made available on Moodle before the course.
As we go through the course I will be recommending specific literature in the context of our classes.
