Course Learning Objectives

At the end of the course students should:

Be familiar with the financial function and capital markets and should be able to measure a firm's financial results and develop financial strategies as well as define the execution plan.
Understand and apply some financial concepts such as asset valuation, capital structure and cost of capital among others.
Show decision-making skills in two areas:
- Investing: calculate the economic assessment of future opportunities and identify the best course of action to maximize the firm's value
- Financing: determine the optimal capital structure identifying different criteria. Understand the interaction with the capital markets to raise funds
This course will contribute to develop analytical and quantitative skills as well as a strategic mindset to take decisions with an impact at a corporate level. By the end of the course students will be able to value assets and identify actions to invest either making or buying and fund a company or project.

Methodology

Sessions in this course have a strong focus on applied learning. This course is oriented to developing capabilities to understand financial concepts and applied them in the appropriate context.
The course is distributed into two parts:
1. Investing: in this section instead of a project we will use case studies for the applied learning. Students are expected to come prepared having read assigned materials. During the first part of the session we will discuss main concepts and questions plenary. During the second part, we will go over a case .
2. Financing: in this last section we will be looking at some listed companies to understand the interactions with the capital markets. We will also cover private companies. We will use videos for the applied learning.

Assessment criteria


Homework (group assignment): 25%
Individual assignment (Final Exam): 75%


Please note that if the grade of the final exam is lower than 35 over 100, then the average grading will not be applied, and the course will be considered failed
