COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

This course examines the strategic factors underlying value creation in multibusiness organizations. It explores issues like vertical integration, horizontal
diversification, M&As, and alliances. The goal is to understand the issues in
managing a firm's diverse businesses, including setting the scope of the
organization, the allocation of resources across diverse businesses, business
portfolio techniques, limits to firm growth, and the role of the headquarter and
the specifying boundary conditions of corporate strategy. Additionally, we
discuss the important role of boundary-spanning activities of alliances and
inorganic growth in the form of Mergers and Acquisitions.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students should:
- Be familiar with the core concepts of corporate strategy including vertical
integration, horizontal diversification, synergies, and risk diversification
- Be able to analyze the strategic positioning of multi-business companies,
and understand the different corporate strategy approaches
- Understand and apply the major corporate strategy tools like portfolio
planning and resource allocation
- Understand alliances and M&A activities as important mechanisms to
manage the scope and strategy of organizations
As a result of this course, we want to help students to develop a strategic
mindset and the ability to analyze and provide recommendations to companies
