Course Learning Objectives

The pervasive digitalization has become a new reality of organizations and society in general. The unique affordances of digital technologies to communicate, process, extract and analyze different kinds of data is not only reshaping the way organizations structure their processes in order produce and deliver products and services, but is also transforming industries giving room for new entrants who displace incumbent ones, and for the dissolution of boundaries between industries. For instance, in the last decade mobile phones have gradually been transformed from providing just telephony service to powerful media and broadband computing devices. This transformation has given rise to a spectacular growth of entrepreneurial initiatives that deliver services through mobile apps. Furthermore, data-driven corporations like Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon, etc. are turning the digital data that they collect into artificial intelligence services that will allow them to create new markets.
The overall goal of this course is that students get the managerial knowledge and skills that enable them to better understand the digitalization process and the new kind of digital infrastructures and platforms that are emerging in order to thrive in the digital economy. The course provides an overview of the concepts and models associated with the digitalization, digital convergence, and digital platforms. The course will combine theory with real-world experience. Case studies will emphasize practical approaches.
