Course Learning Objectives

COURSE GOALS

Insights regarding markets, business opportunities and business models
The startup immersion experience seeks to create a unique learning experience by combining the richness of various company visits and direct interactions with entrepreneurs with academic preparation, analysis and reflection about various business opportunities, business models and market configurations relevant for the different companies visited.

Insights regarding career opportunities
Additionally, the course will help participants get better insights regarding options for their professional careers. Participants will also obtain a more profound knowledge about potential target industries, target companies and contacts in the target companies as they enter the job market.

Diversity of insights
The course will focus primarily on high growth technology based businesses but span different markets and industries (e.g., Finance, ECommerce, Gaming, Hardware, Consumer Services, Professional Services, Advertising). Different business models will be analyzed including ecommerce, subscription models (including SaaS), platforms, account based businesses).

Methodology

The course relies on a range of learning methods to inspire and enhance the students' knowledge and competencies in business model analysis, specific business models and insights into various industries and recent trends.

The following teaching methods will be used:
- Conceptual presentations by the professor
- Application of the concepts using specific companies that will be experienced first hand
- Team preparation and presentation of specific business models with the guidance of the professor
- Presentation and preparation of select industries
- Presentations by entrepreneurs, investors, and other professionals involved in the startup ecosystem

Assessment criteria

The individual grade of each student will be determined by the evaluation of the preparation work in class, the preparation document for the company visit and follow up work of each team, team member peer-evaluation of each team members' input and the quality of response in the Q&A part of each team member.

Individual:
Participation in class (both in preparation and during the trip): 50%

Group:
Final group project hand-in (includes peer evaluation): 50%
