Seminar preparation
In order to have a challenging and interesting seminar we ask all the participants to prepare a case study and to read a short reading (see class Moodle):
- H&M's Global Supply Chain Management Sustainability: Factories and Fast Fashion
Case from WDI Publishing
- How Fast Fashion Works: Can It Work for You, Too?
By Felipe Caro and Victor Martínez de Albéniz. IESE Expert Insight. 2014, Issue 21
There is also an optional reading:
- The Responsible Fashion Company. Integrating ethics and aesthetics in the value chain. Francesca Romana Rinaldi and Salvo Testa. September 2014 (chapters 1 and 2 only)

At the end of the syllabus (Annex 1), we have provided a sustainable fashion reading list prepared by The Ethical Fashion Forum.

Course Learning Objectives

Introduction
This is a new seminar, established by CEMS two years ago. You may remember that the financial crisis in 2008 resulted in profound and prolonged criticism of business schools for "mismanaging? the leadership education of their students. CEMS took these criticisms seriously, and decided to ask its member business schools to try to "innovate? in the way they teach corporate social responsibility and ethics.
Responsible leadership is about making business decisions that, next to the interests of the shareholders, also takes into account all the other stakeholders, such as workers, clients, suppliers, the environment, the community and future generations. (FTimes definition)
At ESADE this year we have decided to "experiment? with it. In this short seminar, instead of learning, teaching, debating, thinking? about what it means to be a "responsible leader? and/or "sustainable leader? we have decided to focus on one industry: fashion. Why fashion? Because it is one of the world's biggest industries, second in number of workers after the automobile industry, and because we are all users. You don't need to be an "expert? to understand the fashion world.

Seminar Learning Objectives
Of course this seminar is clearly aligned with the CEMS MIM learning objectives : internationalism, practical approach, responsible citizenship, reflective critical thinking and comprehensive leadership.
In this respect, a clear goal of the seminar is to deepen the understanding of global leadership as a relational, contextual, and complex phenomenon.
The seminar will also reflect on participants' own qualities as potential global leaders.
At the same time in the seminar we are going to explore with the participants the importance of becoming a "social intrapreneur? inside the future companies and organizations in which they are going to work, in order to help find solutions to the major social challenges facing today's societies.
A social intrapreneur needs to know how to create collective motivations to seduce organization members to work in full service, and develop his/her creativity skills.

Methodology

We have been teaching this course for several years now. We were not satisfied. Finally, last year we found a design that students and ourselves liked. We have designed the course equivalent to a "mini-journey? to explore the self and explore the world, business, and leadership from the self. We invite the participants to adopt an active role in these intensive journeys. You will need to prepare some readings-videos, do several workshops, listen to several guest speakers, and write a personal journal.

ASSESSMENT

ASSESSMENT BREAKDOWN

Description %
Final excercise - 90% 90
Class Participation - 10% 10

Assessment criteria

Grading policy: As in other CEMS seminars, the nature of this seminar on responsible business does not lend itself to objective questions; generally, there are no "right? or "wrong? answers. There are, however, different levels of quality. Grading is a measure of performance (not effort) and is based on pass/fail. Those who complete the seminar and all the activities will receive a "Pass?.
