Prerequisites

None. Fifteen days before the seminar participants will be invited to answer themselves and send a validated 360 competency questionnaire (ESCI-U) to their professional and personal network. The results of the questionnaire will help structure the content of this workshop.

COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

Empirical research strongly suggests that Emotional Intelligence is a powerful predictor of professional success in managerial carreers.
In this practical workshop participants will be invited to explore their emotional and social competency profile -what are their strenghts and weaknesses in terms of "Soft skills"-. With this enhanced self-knowledge the workshop will provide participants with practical tools to better know and manage their own emotional life, as well as to improve their empathy and their ability to manage the emotions of others as future team leaders.
The aim of this workshop is enhancing the global emotional intelligence of particpants as a way to help them being more competitive in the labour market.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to
-Understand the importance of knowing and managing their own emotional life as well as the emotional life of others in their workplace
-Diiscover their own emotional and social competencies profile using ESCI-U a validated 360 questionnaire
-Recognize their strenghts and potential areas of improvement.
-know the basic emotions and what is their impact on our bodies, cognitions, decision-making processes and behaviours.
-Improve their emotional self-regulation: they will be more aware of their emotional state and purposely changing it when required.
- increase their empathy using concrete tools to discover the emotional life of others as condition "sine qua non" to manage them.
- Impact and manage the emotional life of others as a way to influence and lead
- Create a "Development plan" with concrete objectives and action steps to improve at least one emotional and social competency during their MSc experience in Esade.

CONTENT

1. Introduction: Emotions, Emotional Intelligence and why we should care about it

- Emotional Intelligence and carreer success: definitions and empirical findings
- Emotions 101 - Basic emotions and their impact on our cognition, behavior, bodies and decision making processes
- Emotions at the workplace: Introducing Social and Emotional Competencies
- ESCI-U: your competency profile, defining your strengths and areas of improvement

2. Dealing with negative emotions: tools for improving your emotional self-control

- Emotional Self-Awareness: tools to better know yourself as the first step to self-manage you
- The Impact of negative emotions on personal productivity
- Mindfulness as a practice to finding peace in a frantic world
- Other techniques to manage stress and other disruptive emotions

3. Enhancing Positive Functioning: Optimism, happiness and personal productivity

- The "Happiness Advantage": connecting positve affect and business results
- 8 tools to boost your positive emotions in your daily life
- Learned Optimism: beware of your explanatory style!

4. Empathy resources: getting to know the emotional life of others

- Wired to care: the advantage of reading the emotional life of your team, boss and direct reports
- 25 milliseconds to know how he/she is feeling: microexpressions and Empathy.
- Good managers are good listeners: listening with your ears and your eyes

5. Managing others: influence and leadership

- Emotional Contagion and the "Pathos" side of leadership
- Visionary leadership and the management of Enthusiasm
- And now what?: Writing a successful development plan for your near future

Assessment criteria

The Assessment breakdown will be the following:

-In-Class Individual Participation: 33%
- Development plan: 33%
- A multiple-question quizz the last day of the Seminar: 34%

A concrete rubric for each element (In-class participation and development plan) will be published on the syllabus.

In-Class Individual participation will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- the frequency and quality of students' interventions,
- their preparation of the various subjects,
- and their proactive attitude and contribution to positive group dynamics.

The Development plan grading will be based on the following criteria:
-Coherence between the developmental objective and the action steps
-Comprehensiveness: all relevant aspects have been taken into account.

The multiple-choice quizz will contain 20 questions related with required readings and the contents of the practical seminar itself.
