COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

For many observers the impact of digital fabrication on society will far exceed the impact the Internet as had on society. It is still early to validate such prediction, but we can already witness how digital fabrication is impacting many industries and represent a true paradigm change.
This Class will offer an overview of the state-of-the-art of the use of digital fabrication across industries. Student will also learn first hand through practice how to design for digital fabrication and basic techniques of rapid prototyping.

Course Learning Objectives

- Understand the context of Digital Fabrication
- Realize the potential impact of such technology on businesses and society.
- experiment first-hand with 3D modelling and rapid prototyping techniques.

CONTENT

1. Introduction to 3D printing

A New Industrial Revolution?
What is 3D Printing?
How is 3d Printing a game changer?
Impact and use cases

2. Introduction to 3D modeling

practice of modelling using 3D modelling software

3. Introduction to basic electronics

understanding the concepts of microprocessor programming for easy rapid prototyping.

4. Rapid prototyping as a tool to validate an idea

Methodology

Before class students will be assigned reading tasks. The students are asked to submit their analysis prior to meeting on the first days. Each student will share with the rest of the class what he has learned and is opinion on the matter.
Students will be asked to actively take part in class discussions.
The last 3 days of class will be dedicated to hands on practice and student are expected to push their skills between classes in order to develop a running prototype they will present on the last day of class.
