COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM

The goal of this course is to provide participants with the basic knowledge to understand challenges related to diversity and inclusion in society, technology, work, and organizations. Hence, this course is not intended to focus on or engage in an in-depth exploration of any one specific aspect of diversity and inclusion. Rather, the course will enable students to understand current debates about the topic, to think critically about contemporary narratives, and to acquire tools and conceptual frameworks that will allow them to engage in a more informed way in society and in the organizations where they work. Accordingly, this course will complement other courses in the program by adding an important lens through which sustainability challenges and opportunities can be understood more deeply.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students should:
- Recognize the value of diversity and inclusion in organizations, and its contribution to social justice and sustainability;
- Understand the mechanisms that underpin and sustain systems of privilege and discrimination;
- Explain how bias and privilege influence opportunity and effectiveness in organizations;
- Understand how technology, and the lack of neutrality in its deployment, impacts individual perceptions of reality, interpersonal relationships, and approaches to diversity and inclusion;
- Evaluate the ways in which their own identity and personal experiences shape the ways that they interact and engage with others;
- Be prepared to think critically about, and engage in, debates about diversity and inclusion;
- Promote ethical and inclusive practices in sustainability management.

Methodology

This course is organized as a participative and reflective experience that weaves theory and practice. In order to work towards the achievement of the learning objectives described above, the sessions will include a mix of lecture-style explanation of concepts and theories, plenary discussions, and group work. Throughout the course, students will learn from and reflect upon currently developing and historically important cases, and they will engage in interactive activities. The course will be taught by two members of ESADE Faculty, each providing different perspectives on diversity and inclusion. Classes will be delivered face-to-face.

The central driver around which the course is designed is participation, meaning participating in class discussions, working with the group, and contributing to the class through individual work. Our goal is threefold: (1) to foster an atmosphere of openness and dialogue; (2) to challenge participants to give the best of themselves; and (3) to look at issues from different angles and perspectives. Students will also be encouraged to reflect upon the links between what they learn in class and their personal experience.
