COURSE CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAM
"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place"
George Bernard Shaw
"The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said"
Peter Drucker
The objective of the seminar is to equip students with some of the skills and techniques that will be needed during the CEMS year and beyond as students move into their roles as managers, consultants or entrepreneurs. Business Communication is the principal management skill required by effective leaders, according to the American Management Association, yet we often perceive these softer skills as secondary to more technical skills, say marketing, finance or other content usually covered in Masters management courses.
The over-riding objective of this course is to provide a space for students to practise and develop their skills in a safe environment. Mainly the course deals with inter-personal communication skills that allow students to develop into managers who are comfortable communicating effectively with those around them . The course also develops students' ability to handle crisis communication, especially in a media-savvy world.
Course Learning Objectives
Students will find that they take away a number of skills from this seminar. They should be able to locate conceptual issues related to communication in order to improve their own style and to allow them to critically analyse their ability to communicate better. The course will develop the following skills:
Communication used in -
Dealing with the media
Empathy
Networking
Conflict management
Persuasion and winning minds
Presenting, pitching and reporting
Working in teams
The activities are very hands-on and we use an in-depth communication simulation to highlight some of the main learning points seen above
Methodology
Assessment criteria
The course is designed as a 16 hour seminar. Students follow two narratives during the course. The first deals with a consultancy project that requires students to understand, use and evaluate skills acquisition regarding the objective competencies. The second takes the form of a crisis communication project that develops the skill set. This is a very practical course with a high degree of student involvement. Output deliverables include presentations, reports, dialogues, video messages and interviews.
