Prerrequisitos

Previous background in engineering, or other technical experience is preferred. Strong team working skills. Openness to work in a multidisciplinary environment

Rationale:

Challenge Based Innovation @Barcelona (CBI@BCN) brings together multidisciplinary teams to work on societal challenges by matching specific human needs with technologies developed at CERN. The aim of the course is to learn how to generate conceptual, futuristic ideas and how to move them into testable, tangible prototypes. This course will help students to develop skills in multidisciplinary teamwork, managing projects in uncertainty and in working with an international research organization. To enable this learning experience, CBI@BCN brings together: a multidisciplinary network of leading educational institutions, CERN knowledge experts, scientists and technologies and IdeaSquare, a singular environment for creativity and design at CERN.

The teams will combine business, design and engineering in order to bring the latest scientific development to our everyday life. The students are introduced to the methodology of human-centered design, which drives the teams to interact early with key stakeholders to learn about their specific needs, and to iteratively test proposed solutions with the users. At the end of the course, teams present a proof of concept prototype supported by a business model proposal.

During the course, we will follow the Design Thinking approach to tackle an innovation challenge. The course is like a studio, where teams work on their challenge on a weekly basis, receiving lectures and introducing practical methods that can soon be put into practice.

The course is based on the idea of experiential, problem-based learning. In other words, learning the Design Thinking approach in a participatory and active manner, by applying it to a specific innovation challenge. Students and faculty from three institutions will participate: ESADE, IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) and UPC-TelecomBCN. The students will follow an initial and intensive training of two weeks at full time all together. The first week at the home institutions and the second one at IdeaSquare (CERN). In these two weeks, the teams will be formed, the methodological bases will be set and the challenges will be revealed to the teams. Then, they will work at home institutions along ten weeks, devoting an equivalent weekly time of 1-2 days depending on the project phase, with an intermediate intensive period (hackathon) at IdeaSquare. At the end, a second intensive week at IdeaSquare will be devoted to finish the solution integration and to prepare the final presentation of the results. This presentation has two parts: a demonstration of the performance of the prototype and a public presentation.
