Contribución de la asignatura al programa
An introduction to SQL, the programming language designed for managing data held in a database. It enables you to access and manipulate all the crucial information of your business, with the objective of making decisions based in data-driven processes. Knowing the bases of SQL language is important in three ways:
- Knowing what an information system is able to do for your business to design the better strategy
- Being able to speak a common language with your technical team to correctly convey the instructions to them
- Being independent with data management to discover important insights for your business.
The beginner version of this course does not assume any prior knowledge.
Objetivos de aprendizaje de la asignatura
The learning objectives are focused in covering the points described previously. The student will acquire the following skills:
- Understanding the benefits and scope of databases in a data-driven world
- Broad understanding of databases basics
- How to think algorithmically and solve queries efficiently
- Understanding data structures to access big data databases or to use it for data science processes
- Familiarity in the most important language for accessing data

Metodología
This is a practical course in which prior knowledge is not assumed. Sessions are participative and some exercises, solved by teams (breakout rooms in online sessions), should be delivered.

Criterios de evaluación
This course is based on a participative methodology:
- Active participation and class attendance represent 60% of the course grade. This includes a final test.
- A group exercise will account for the rest 40% of the course grade.You have to complete a project to address some real case problem mainly concerning data manipulation and knowledge acquisition.
